There Are Two Major Performance Rights Organizations Based In The US
Performance Rights Organizations
BMI vs ASCAP
Unlike other performance rights organizations, BMI has been around longer. Therefore, they have access to a larger network of publishers.
A large majority of the biggest artists in the world are registered with BMI.
Due to BMI's large network and large membership, the organization has more resources to offer their members (e.g. Workshops, Webinars)
Unlike BMI, ASCAP charges a fee to join as a songwriter & publisher. However, the collective cost of both is cheaper than the cost to join BMI as a publisher.
You can join ASCAP even if you don't have an US Social Security Number or if you are not a US citizen
Due to the fact that ASCAP was created after BMI, the organization has a more modern touch.
